When creepy, crawly insects invade your home it can be both a nuisance and an embarrassment. According to the Smithsonian Institution, there are over 10 quintillion insects in the world. With that many bugs, it is understandable why it is so hard to keep them out of your home. Knowing what attracts them is one of the most important ways to prevent them from getting inside. Here are some tips to help you the creepy crawlies outside where they belong.

Eliminate entry ways

Bugs are attracted to food, water and shelter. The inside of your home provides all of these. Your first line of defense against invading insects is to keep them out. You need to identify and seal all gaps and cracks in your house.

The place to start is at your doors. A well-sealed door goes a long way toward keeping out insects. At the bottom of the entryway, add a threshold plate made of aluminum or steel. Attach a door sweep to cover any gap between the bottom of the door and the threshold piece. Nylon brush sweeps are best. Add weather stripping around the door and caulk around the door frame.

Next, examine the outside of your house. Repair any missing siding, crumbling masonry or rotted wood. Look for gaps in the roof line where wasps and bees often build their nests and repair them. Caulk around all window frames or anywhere you see a gap in the exterior. You should also add mesh screen to the chimney opening and any vents.

Keep it clean

Even if you have properly sealed your home, some insects will find a way in. Do not encourage them to stay. Get rid of any food source that would seem inviting to them. Keep the house neat and clutter free. Keep all food in sealed containers. Clean up all food remains after meals and remove them from the house. All trash containers should have tight-fitting lids. Clean and sanitized them regularly.
